YK-11, also known as myostin, is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been clinically shown to partially activate the androgen receptor while simultaneously functioning as a myostatin inhibitor.

An exciting study by researchers Lee et al. explored YK-11 as a potential agent for muscle building and muscle maintenance in situations of sepsis. In the study, mice were fed two different doses of YK-11 (administered orally, 350 mg/kg and 700 mg/kg) for ten days. Next, the researchers examined the response of these mice to a peritoneal injection of E. coli bacteria.

The study showed that YK-11 inhibits the action of myostatin, a hormone that limits muscle growth in mammals (source). Mice treated with YK-11 not only maintained their body mass during the disease phase, but were also found to have a more favorable fat-to-muscle ratio. This means that these mice had less fat and more lean tissue compared to the control group.

In addition, the results showed that the treated mice were able to restore lost muscle mass in the back and thighs after exposure to systemic E. coli. Their muscle cells also appeared to be more resistant to atrophy compared to those of the control group.

In addition to its effects on muscle mass, YK-11 also affected the immune response against gram-negative bacteria. Treatment with YK-11 resulted in reduced negative effects of bacterial infections, including a decrease in endotoxins and inflammatory markers in the lungs.

Furthermore, there were significant reductions in biomarkers indicative of organ damage, including liver and kidney markers such as AST, ALT and BUN. Using YK-11 also seemed to improve the elimination of the harmful bacteria from the mice's organs (source).

Finally, it is noteworthy that the study also looked at the survival rate in sepsis. Mice treated with YK-11 had a greater chance of survival to the 72-hour mark and showed little to no evidence of bacterial colonization in their vital organs.
