Niagen Nicotinamide Riboside
Nicotinamide riboside, also called niagen, is an alternative form of vitamin B3 used in studies for its ability to convert to NAD+. NAD+ plays a role in various biological processes and interest in niagen in scientific research is increasing, especially focused on its potential effects on sirtuins, enzymes involved in various cellular processes.
Important in the research into niagen is the focus on PGC-1α, a protein that is associated with the protection of brain cells against certain forms of stress. This is particularly relevant in studies focusing on neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. It is being investigated whether niagen, through its conversion to NAD+, can influence the expression of PGC-1α and thus processes related to these diseases.
Studies in animal models examine the effects of niagen on cognitive functions and certain proteins associated with Alzheimer's. These studies focus on the potential of niagen in the context of neurodegenerative disorders and aim to understand the underlying mechanisms.
In addition, research is examining the effects of niagen on muscle tissue, particularly in relation to NAD+ levels and muscle health under stressful conditions.
